Apple Education Watch - Iowa School District May Go Mac
by , 2:15 PM EDT, August 27th, 2003
Newton, Iowa school superintendent Steve McDermott has stated publicly he is in ongoing discussions with Apple Computer concerning a one-to-one deployment of Macs for students in the district's schools.
According to an article in the Newton, Iowa Daily News, the district has been quoted a price from Apple of $300 per student for a Mac-based solution for the schools. Apple's one-to-one program provides one computer for each student along with technical support and other resources. This program is the centerpiece of Apple's education strategy and the focus of the company's education sales efforts.
Schools throughout the nation are pressured to meet standards established by the No Child Left Behind Act. Apple Computer has been aggressively marketing its education products as a means for schools to meet the federal standards mandated by the Act.
According to the article, Mr. McDermott is seeking corporate support to help with the costs of the Apple one-to-one solution in the district's schools.
