MS Office 2008 SP1 Improves Stability, Security, More

by , 3:10 AM EDT, May 13th, 2008

Microsoft introduced Service Pack 1 for Office 2008 for the Mac on Tuesday. The update addresses several user requests, improves overall application stability and security, and performance issues.

The service pack improves compatibility when exchanging files between Excel 2008 for the Mac and Excel 2007 for Windows, and improved printing reliability for elements in Excel 2008 workbooks. It also improved the Entourage calendar view and all-day reminders with reoccurrence, added the ability to send and view images in Entourage from third-party tools, and improved overall Exchange Server support.

Microsoft Word 2008 now sports updated formatting and recording status in Notebook layout, improved reliability and responsiveness in the Document map, and improved accuracy when orienting tables with cell shading. PowerPoint now supports viewing Mac-based .PPTX files on Windows Mobile phones, corrected crashing problems when printing to high resolution printers, improved printing speeds, and supports using AppleScript to implement custom scripts that operate on the current selection.

Microsoft Office 2008 SP1 is a free update for Office 2008 users and will be available by noon Pacific time at the Microsoft Web site.

Jeff, I am just not seeing it. The links you included in the article point to the 12.0.1 update for Office 2008 which was released 2 months ago. MS AutoUpdate also sees nothing new. Am I missing something? I'd love an update that makes this Intel native POS run as well ass 2004 under Rosetta.

Unless MS posted it, then pulled it after it found that it broke a lot of stuff after install. You know, testing and all is a high priority @ MS. I say this cynically and sarcastically.

Yeah, I'm not seeing it out there either through the auto-updater or as a download.

Looks like the "by noon" report was correct. It's before noon Pacific, and I see the update on the site. If you click on Office 2008 at the bottom of the linked page, you'll see Service Pack 1 (12.1.0) listed there for download. Enjoy!

I installed SP1 and now word/excel/etc won't start. I get the set up assistant, and that is it. I click finish and the updater starts and that is it.

This sucks! Anyone else have the issue?

Guest @ 9:29 AM -Actually if you weren't such a tool you wouldn't be making such statements. TMO updated it shortly after I posted. The last line wasn't there initially.

Come again when your meds are working.
